last week of uni break

hi everyone

sadly.. this is now the last week of my 'long' mid year uni holidays. It felt so long at first and now I'm dreading the start of uni and starting my second year units!!

I've got two accounting, one math and a core management unit this semester and its pretty fair to say i'll be studying A LOT more this semester. On top i'll be trying to save my money for a much needed vacation (still planning/dreaming) and looking out for a part-time job. I love my parents but I don't think just a supermarket job for seven years counts as enough experience on my CV.

I'm not going to start telling you I'm a fitness guru and start preaching about how healthy is a lifestyle blah blah.. but I've always had troubles keeping a good nutritious eating habit. So in order to help me conquer my bad temptations and reduce my weight, I'll be posting frequent recipes of the healthy food I make etc!

hehe thanks for reading and have a great week everybody :3

Salmon w/ quinoa and sweet potato salad

HI GUYS

first of all... TGIF.

yay, today I didn't go to work so I went with my cousin to play Squash in the morning. We played at the Hyatt Terrace squash courts in East Perth today. I'm still new at the sport and my aim is bad... but on the bright side our rallies are starting to get longer and better!!

After playing, we went and bought some healthy groceries together. Sweet potatoes, broccoli, grape tomatoes, almond milk, salmon etc. Then decided to head back and make lunch at my house!! Annie poached the eggs - yeah.. so its a lot harder than it looks for all who haven't yet tried hahaha!

I cooked my recipe adapted from The West Australian newspaper.

pan fried salmon w/ quinoa and sweet potato salad
PREP & COOKING TIME: 30 minutes
DIFFICULTY: EASY
NUTRITIONAL VALUE: 706.25 calories per serve*
SERVES 4

Ingredients

  • 2 small sweet potatoes - peeled & chopped into 2cm cubes
  • 1 punnet of cherry tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of broccoli
  • 1 cup of quinoa**
  • 4 salmon fillets, 100-135g each
  • 4 large fresh eggs
  • extra virgin & olive oils
  • white vinegar
  • sea salt and ground black pepper
  • 1 small lemon, juice
  • 1 tbsp of wholegrain mustard
  • 1 tbsp of tarragon
  • 1/2 tsp of ground cumin
*For a lower calorie count replace quinoa for just 1 cup of lentils and change the protein to chicken or tuna.
**you can alternate if you like - 1/2 cup of green lentils and 1/2 cup of quinoa

Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C. Place the cubes of sweet potato and cherry tomatoes onto a baking tray, then drizzle with olive oil, sea salt and ground black pepper. Roast for 20 minutes.
  2. Place 1 cup of quinoa w/ 3 cups of water into a sauce pan and cook for 15-20 minutes (to cook the quinoa bring pan to a light boil and reduce the heat to a simmer). If you are also using lentils use the same process, except the measurements would be 1/2 cup of grain w/ 1 & 1/2 cups of water.
  3. While the quinoa and vegetables are cooking, heat a grill/pan with a tbsp of olive oil and grill/pan fry the salmon. 1-2 minutes each side.
  4. Using another sauce pan fill with fresh water bringing it to a boil, pour 5 drops of vinegar. Using a metal slotted spoon create a 'whirl' and drop the egg (yolk intact) into the sauce pan and watch the egg cook to perfection (alternatively pour a egg into cling wrap and drop into the boiling water). Once the egg has been cooked carefully remove from sauce pan using the slotted metal spoon and place onto a paper towel.
  5. Once the quinoa has been cooked season with lemon juice, sea salt and ground black pepper.
  6. Using the same saucepan steam the broccoli florets in fresh water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and plunge the florets briefly in cold water to cool.
  7. Whisk wholegrain mustard, 4 drops of vinegar, tarragon, cumin and extra virgin olive oil together.
  8. Combine the sweet potato, broccoli florets and quinoa together and pour the dressing over the top.
  9. Toss well and serve w/ cherry tomatoes & a poached egg on the side and cooked salmon fillet on top!
This recipe has been a treat to make and its one of my favourites. Its quick, easy and nutritious!!!

Hope you enjoyed my recipe post and please comment below if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend

Jamie's Italian

Hi guys!

Forgot to include these photos from dinner at Jamie's Italian after Pippa's exhibition!

Food: Wild Rabbit Taglioni and Blue Swimmer Crab Risotto - both in entree size

Drinks: Florence Fizz, Perfect Manhattan and Jamie's Grown-Up Ice Tea

Jamie's Italian located on William St near the Wellington St Bus Station and also apart of the Perth 140 William Complex. Famous Jamie Oliver's modern take on an Italian restaurant.

Open all day, every day.

The food was good, but the service was one of the worst. I really hope they too look at their staff rules and regulations, for a staff to spill pasta on my sister's coat and do NOTHING except for an apology is eye-openingly unacceptable.

At last the weekend has come to an end.. have a great week every1

 Hey everybody (o´ω`o)

On Thursday night me, Gabby and Jack went to Pippa McManus Illustration at Perth 140 William to view her Sleeping Beauties art exhibition!

Perth born Pippa has been working at her art studio located in the new/recent Perth 140 William. Her art work is inspired by both her love & passion for painting and fashion design.

All pieces created and presented by the lovely Pippa McManus.

We had a blast, viewing her art work and most of all meeting/talking to her. Pippa thank you so much and we can't wait to hear about your art class @ Claremont Quarter in September???

updates // hello

HI GUYS!!

First of all I'm blogging from my phone. Long story short my Mac air crashed and I had to get the disk/ssd card replaced which Apple still covered even though my warranty ended 3 DAYS AGO. Incredibly lucky because the repair costed $946!!!

Good news is that I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow and I'll be back to blogging/job hunting/online shopping from my laptop :3

I also get my exam results in a few days (extremely nervous).....

The brand ambassador program I've been apart of by amazing social networking site Posse ends this week (Justine thank you for all your help/support and effort!).

and today.. Finally got to have lunch at Uncle Joes and then tea at CNR!!

My two favourite places in Perth, I'll be posting again this week about all my favourite finds of the month so stay tuned  (maybe another vlog????).

hope everyone has a great week and talk to y'all soon ^_^*

The Stables Bar

Hi everyone

Time for part II of tonight's blog posts!

Today for lunch Nikki and I booked a table for 2 at new-ish, The Stables Bar. Located in a lane way off Hay street and a few buildings down from Perth's Shafto Lane. We dined there really interested to try some of the things listed on their menu in particular their signature Stables Wagon Wheel dessert plate.

The location of The Stables is great, not too far from the city centre and visually very well designed. We walked in to a packed out bottom floor, made our way upstairs for our reservation in main dining area. I love the decor, from the red brick lane way to the seating arrangements, wall art and lighting choices (hanging lightbulbs in particular). We sat down, keen as beans to try the food out. Unfortunately things for us from this point onwards were just pretty much down-hill.

Starting with the service, one waiter dropped an ice cube on our table then proceeded to hide it behind the water vase and walk away. Another waitress approached our table about drinks. I was a bit lost and I asked her what flavour bitters The Stables had, her reply ??. Long story short she didn't know what I was talking about.. I wouldn't be so worried if this were a normal cafe however being The Stables and a rather pricey CBD food venue I expected staff to have manners and be knowledgable. The service problems hit one more time when it was time for us to order our desserts, a 15 minute wait to place an order when there are ample staff around is disappointing. I won't comment on the service any further but I hope they changed staff rules and regulations pronto.

The food and drinks, I ordered the Coconut poached chicken, papaya and Thai basil salad and Nikki ordered the Chicken schnitzel, Italian coleslaw & parmesan. We also ordered hand cut chips with chipotle mayonnaise to share. The food arrived quite quickly (compared to the dessert) and we were very eager to dig in!

I loved the flavours in the salad and the chicken was succulent with a subtle coconut cream taste and the complementing flavours from the papaya and basil made this salad a big treat to eat! The hand cut chips were also great, crunchy and the chipotle mayo was yum.

Nikki ordered a cocktail - Warm Apple Pie, it was most definitely a winner. It tasted exactly like a warm apple pie minus the dollop of ice cream on the side. I also ordered a glass of the FEE Brothers, Aztec Chocolate Bitters w/ Lemonade - weirdly refreshing! Definitely recommend trying both drinks, you won't be let down!

Nikki ordered the Chicken schnitzel, Italian coleslaw and parmesan. The coleslaw was tasty and loved the flavours... sadly the main part was dry, unseasoned and bland. A little bit of sauce to moisten the chicken instead of the salad's grated parmesan would have been much appreciated.

Now onto the last part.... Desserts.

Visually both desserts were presented stunningly and we could not wait to try them out. I liked the idea of the deconstructed wagon wheel and I was so interested to try it........ the berry sorbet tasted great full of flavour as did the crumble. However the dark chocolate ice cream and mini marshmallows hold a completely different story.. first of all the dark chocolate was salty not bitter, I struggled to finish it and the marshmallows.. w0w. I don't know if that was the point for them to taste somewhat smoky and burnt but it was not going down well with my taste buds.
Nikki ordered Crema catalana, sticky mandarin and mini Spanish doughnuts. the crema catalana was rich in flavour but a bit too runny, and the spanish doughnuts were sadly raw in the middle.. too bad because the outer part tasted good.

The bill in total came to almost $100... and sadly I'd have to rate The Stables Bar a big overpriced miss and if I was going back I would definitely be dining there for dinner or just buying drinks from the bar.

Uncle Joe's Mess Hall

HI EVERYBODY

Hows your week been ?? TGIF. My week was hectic but good, I worked and went to the gym and I also got a normal sleeping pattern going now. Today Nikki and I to went Uncle Joe's for coffee before lunch at The Stables (regretting that decision now tbh).

Uncle Joe's owned by the same fantastic Cain family that run the amazing hair salon - Head Studio. I'm a huge fan of Head Studio and i've been going there for years now, if there's one hair cut your not going to be regretting its gonna be from them. Located on King street towards the Wellington street side lies Head Studio, POP nail bar, Uncle Joe's Barber and the mess hall.

I decided to dine at Uncle Joe's particularly because i've been meaning to visit and I also wanted to try something new and fresh! I'm beyond happy that we went today; the coffee was good, cupcakes were delectable - srsly good and the feel of the place is new and exciting! Just such a shame we ended up dining for lunch at another place.. which was not worth the sacrifice.

Here's a little picture collage below of our time at UJs..

Uncle Joe's is my favourite cafe in the Perth CBD area now, its great to chill, have a nice coffee and tasty sweet treats (great for those cheat days).
